Vinyl Anti-Skating Explained: A Guide
If your turntable has an anti-skate dial, hanging weight, or tiny bias slider, it can feel like one of those adjustments designed mostly to intimidate new vinyl listeners. It is not. Anti-skating is simply the turntable's way of helping the stylus sit evenly in the record groove while the record spins. Set it close enough and you get cleaner inner grooves, better stereo balance, and less uneven wear.
That matters because vinyl is no longer a tiny hobby. What anti-skating actually does
When a pivoted tonearm plays a record, friction between the stylus and groove acts along the direction of record rotation. Because the arm is angled and anchored at a pivot, that friction creates a side force that tends to pull the arm inward, toward the spindle. - Play a familiar, clean record. Choose a side with vocals or bright instruments near the end.
- Listen for one-channel stress. If sibilance leans to one side, make small changes and replay the same passage.
- Check more than one radius. Listen near the beginning, middle, and end. You are aiming for the best average, not perfection at every groove.
